49th Infantry Regiment

49th Infantry Regiment

Modern Era, United States, Infantry

The 49th Infantry Regiment was part of the Army's wartime and interwar expansion base and did not retain the same long-term prominence as some better-known active regiments. Like other lineages in this range, it reflects the Army's practice of creating units for specific strategic needs and then reducing or inactivating them when those needs changed.

Its historical value lies less in a single famous campaign than in the way it illustrates the depth of the Army's mobilization structure in the twentieth century. Regiments such as the 49th made large wartime armies possible even when they later receded from public memory.

The 49th Infantry thus stands as one of the many supporting lineages behind the better-known combat regiments of the modern U.S. Army.
