Modern Era, United States, Infantry
This page collects the existing battalion illustrations and additional documented historical battalions of the 8th Infantry Regiment. The historical entries include inactive units and earlier designations; the regimental image identifies entries without a battalion-specific illustration.
The 1st Battalion is the clearest modern combat battalion of the Fighting Eagles. The parent regiment page builds toward the battalion's Vietnam service under the 4th Infantry Division, which gave the regiment one of its most recognizable modern combat chapters.
That later Vietnam story sits on top of the regiment's earlier 4th Infantry Division identity from World War II, so the 1st Battalion reads as the strongest bridge between the regiment's European and Southeast Asian combat history.
The 2d Battalion is the better place to frame the regiment's longer Cold War and postwar continuity. The parent regiment page emphasizes how closely the 8th Infantry remained tied to the 4th Infantry Division even as the Army moved from regiments to battle groups and then to battalions.
That gives the 2d Battalion slot a useful role on the page: not the most famous combat chapter, but the steadier continuation of the regiment's divisional identity.
The local icon set includes a 3d Battalion, but the parent regiment page's clearer battalion story is focused on the 1st and 2d. For that reason the 3d Battalion remains a heritage placeholder inside the icon set rather than a battalion entry with the same level of confidence.
A later battalion-by-battalion research pass can revisit whether this slot should remain as a placeholder or be tied to a more specific later lineage.
The 4th Battalion served at Coleman Barracks near Mannheim with the 8th Infantry Division.
It deployed to Kuwait for security duties in 1991. After moving to Fort Lewis in 1994, its personnel and mission passed to the 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry. Regimental history (Wikipedia).
Research note: The added historical entries cite their sources individually. Regimental illustrations are labeled as such. An earlier battalion designation can continue through another battalion or a separate battery; these relationships are identified in the entries. The original three entries are retained; the additional entries do not treat regimental campaign credits as evidence that every battalion fought in those campaigns.
