87th Infantry Regiment

87th Infantry Regiment

Modern Era, United States, Infantry

The 87th Infantry Regiment is best known through the mountain-infantry tradition of the modern U.S. Army. It became closely associated with the 10th Mountain Division and with the specialized cold-weather and mountain warfare identity that set that division apart from most of the Army.

Its modern history therefore differs from many other higher-numbered regiments. Instead of serving mainly as an abstract lineage, the 87th Infantry remained tied to one of the Army's most distinctive active divisions and later carried that identity into the post-Cold War era.

The regiment stands as one of the clearest examples in this number range of a lineage with a recognizable specialty and continuing operational identity.
