30th Infantry Regiment

30th Infantry Regiment

Modern Era, United States, Infantry

The present 30th Infantry Regiment was constituted in 1901 during the Army's expansion for overseas duty. Although earlier units had used the number during the War of 1812 and the Civil War, the modern regiment dates from the Philippine-American War period and belongs to the wave of regiments created for America's new global commitments.

In World War I the regiment was assigned to the 3rd Division, and that divisional relationship remained important in the years that followed. The regiment also served in World War II and later through battalion-level lineages in the modern Army, linking the early twentieth-century expansion era to later conflicts.

The 30th Infantry therefore represents the generation of regiments that were not products of the frontier army, but of the overseas and division-based Army that emerged after 1900.
