The field artillery lineage became the 6th Missile Battalion, 3d Field Artillery, on 1 September 1971. It received the shorter designation 6th Battalion, 3d Field Artillery, on 15 September 1983; the Army's lineage history records it as inactive. Army lineage history, Part 1, PDF page 409.
The 8th Missile Battalion, 3d Artillery, was activated at Fort Bliss on 1 February 1961. Its headquarters incorporated the former Headquarters Battery, 3d Artillery Group, later that year, and the battalion designation was shortened in June 1968.
On 1 September 1971 its field artillery component became the 8th Battalion, 3d Field Artillery, and was inactivated on Okinawa. Its air defense component continued separately as the 8th Battalion, 3d Air Defense Artillery. Army lineage history, Part 1, PDF page 411.
Research note: The added historical entries cite their sources individually. Regimental illustrations are labeled as such. An earlier battalion designation can continue through another battalion or a separate battery; these relationships are identified in the entries. These additions follow Janice E. McKenney, Field Artillery (U.S. Army Center of Military History, 2010), Parts 1 and 2. The published lineages principally cover developments through 2003; they are not a current order of battle. The original five symbol cards retain their links to individual reference pages.
