The 6th Howitzer Battalion, 16th Artillery, was activated at Fort Chaffee on 23 August 1962. It was inactivated at Fort Sill on 26 August 1968.
Its headquarters was simultaneously redesignated as Battery F, 16th Artillery, and activated in Vietnam. That battery was inactivated in April 1970 and received the field artillery designation in September 1971. The later battery service should be distinguished from the earlier battalion. The 7th Howitzer Battalion, 16th Artillery, was assigned to the 8th Infantry Division and activated in Germany on 1 May 1960. It became the 7th Battalion, 16th Artillery, on 1 April 1963.
Its designation changed to 7th Battalion, 16th Field Artillery, in September 1971. It was inactivated in Germany on 13 September 1972 and relieved from assignment to the 8th Infantry Division. Army lineage history, Part 1, PDF page 645.
Research note: The added historical entries cite their sources individually. Regimental illustrations are labeled as such. An earlier battalion designation can continue through another battalion or a separate battery; these relationships are identified in the entries. These additions follow Janice E. McKenney, Field Artillery (U.S. Army Center of Military History, 2010), Parts 1 and 2. The published lineages principally cover developments through 2003; they are not a current order of battle. The original five symbol cards retain their links to individual reference pages.
