In the early 1980s this was a Tu-16 base (alongside Mary and Semipalitinsk) for Afghanistan bombing operations. Now operated by Uzbekistan Air Force.The U.S. Air Force used the facility from October 2001 to July 2005 as the central base for Afghanistan operations; the lease was terminated due to increasing tensions between the U.S. and Uzbekistan.
