Route identity at a glance
Highway markers communicate with shape and color as well as numerals. The U.S. highway shield and the red, white, and blue Interstate shield distinguish two road systems even when a driver has only a moment to look.
The Interstate design was selected in 1957 through a process that drew on proposals from the states. Elements from Missouri and Texas submissions contributed to the final design, which was tested under different viewing conditions. The result shows how a small graphic can combine national identity with the practical demands of navigation.
